Decoding URL Filtering

What is URL Filtering?

URL stands for Uniform Resource Locator and refers to the exact address of a website, database, or application. A URL is unique to each webpage, database, application, etc., and allows a browser to retrieve that specific item when requested. 

URL filtering is a security technology that restricts the websites a user can access in a company setting. It works by comparing requested web addresses against a defined database, then allowing or blocking access based on the company's predecided rules.

How Does URL Filtering Work?

URL filtering intercepts web requests before they reach their destination and evaluates them against predefined rules. 

The filtering system checks the requested URL against:

  • Category databases: Websites are pre-classified into categories (e.g., news, social media, gambling, malware, phishing) by the filtering vendor.
  • Blocklists and allowlists: Specific URLs or domains that are explicitly blocked or permitted.
  • Reputation scores: Many modern filters use threat intelligence to assign a risk score to a URL based on its age, behavior, hosting history, and association with known attacks.
  • Advanced URL filtering: Advanced systems scan a page's content and URL in real time to detect newly created malicious sites that haven't been categorized yet.

If the requested webpage falls into any of these categories, the system blocks it, and the user cannot access it. If not, the browsing process goes on as usual. 

There are two general approaches to URL filtering: standalone and integrated. 

Standalone URL Filtering vs An Integrated Approach to URL Filtering

Standalone URL filtering relies solely on URL filtering. Relying solely on URL filtering is insufficient due to its limited scope and lack of advanced threat detection capabilities. 

In simpler terms, URL filtering alone cannot coordinate the actions needed to mitigate potential risks because it lacks integration and visibility. 

For example, an organization's intrusion prevention system (IPS) may detect a malicious website, but because the standalone URL filtering cannot interact with the IPS, it will not prevent the user from visiting that website.

Limitations of URL Filtering

URL filtering has a couple of limitations. These are:
